Momenta Earns One of the Industry's First Full ASIL D Certification for Its Safety-Mechanism Middleware, Marking a New Breakthrough in Intelligent Driving Safety

2026-03-06

On March 6, Momenta announced a milestone achievement in intelligent driving safety: three middleware products within its in-house developed unified foundational software framework for autonomous driving, the Open BSW Framework (OBF) – Execution Management (OBF-EM), State Management (OBF-SM), and Platform Health Management (OBF-PHM) – have all received the highest-level ISO 26262 ASIL D functional safety product certification from the internationally renowned testing and certification body TÜV Rheinland. Following its earlier certification of the Communication Management middleware (OBF-CM) in 2024, Momenta thereby becomes one of the industry's first company to pass an international certification body's most stringent ASIL D safety-level assessment across all of the key middleware responsible for safety mechanisms. This marks the establishment of a world-leading intelligent driving safety system at the underlying-architecture level, setting an entirely new industry benchmark for system-level safety in the era of "software-defined vehicles."

ISO 26262 is a globally recognized and rigorous automotive functional safety standard, and ASIL D is its highest functional safety level. The certifying body, TÜV Rheinland, is a world-leading provider of testing and inspection services that has performed vehicle-domain inspection and testing since 1904, bringing more than 150 years of accumulated technical expertise, with certification results widely regarded as authoritative across the global automotive industry.

Autonomous driving middleware is the core software layer between upper-level application algorithms and the underlying hardware/operating system. It enables hardware-software decoupling, standardized inter-module communication, and resource scheduling, and is a key pillar of "software-defined vehicles." If the intelligent driving system were an airplane, the algorithms would be the pilot, the operating system the engine, and the middleware the "flight-control system" that governs the aircraft's attitude, monitors engine status, and ensures all systems work in concert. The newly certified components are precisely the safety-responsible "brain" within this "flight-control system":

·       The Execution Management (OBF-EM) middleware handles platform initialization and the starting and stopping of application processes;

·       The State Management (OBF-SM) middleware determines the state of the entire system and, working together with other OBF middleware modules (such as OBF-EM), starts function groups and transitions system states;

·       The Platform Health Management (OBF-PHM) middleware works with other middleware modules to enable fault monitoring and fault reporting.

Momenta's four certified autonomous driving middleware products help ensure the correctness and stability of system functions at multiple stages; they are not only the core safety pillars of Momenta's unified foundational software framework, OBF, but also the technical cornerstone of a "safe and reassuring" intelligent driving experience.

As Momenta's in-house developed unified foundational software framework for autonomous driving, OBF comprises a fully self-developed stack of base software, middleware products, and supporting toolchains; it supports a range of hardware platforms and enables the efficient mass-production deployment of intelligent driving systems. As the global intelligent driving industry has formed a rich and diverse ecosystem of collaboration, the safety of product systems has grown ever more important. The certification process for OBF's key components was exceptionally rigorous, spanning the full path from design to deployment and simulating and validating a wide range of fault conditions and operating scenarios to ensure that every line of code and every function was thoroughly tested. The four certified software products have been validated across multiple software and hardware platforms and deployed in numerous mass-production projects, accumulating over 7 billion kilometers of data. The efficient synergy between Momenta's safety-engineering system and its mass-production delivery capabilities has earned broad recognition from OEM customers at home and abroad.

Momenta CEO Xudong Cao said:
